Wedding season is in full swing, not just for me, but for many of my clients planning their big day this Spring & Summer! In the huge list of decisions to make, another one you are probably thinking about is what to do with your hair. Here are a few tips and ideas to help with these big decisions!
1. Start collecting pictures. Create a pinboard on pinterest, a collage on your phone, or the good old-fashioned way of magazine tear-outs.. whatever is your method, just start collecting. Be sure to be able to talk about and pin point exactly what it is about each pic that you like. Try to avoid choosing the picture based on the dress, makeup, or other factors and focus solely on the hair.. You will also want to select styles that have similar length and texture as your own!
2. Schedule a trial run or 2 with your stylist. Getting the perfect look for your big day does take practice and talking it out with your stylist. I’d recommend scheduling one on a day with nothing planned, then you could do your 2nd trial run on the day you have scheduled for your bridal portraits. Be sure to come with hair that has not been straightened with a flat iron that day, is not squeaky clean, but not overly dirty. I’d recommend washing it the night before and keeping it natural the day of your trial runs. Hair that has been flat ironed will not hold curl and you will not get a good idea of what it can do!
3. Plan ahead! Many salons and stylists book up for wedding season very far in advance. For my brides, I recommend scheduling your hair colors/cuts, trial runs, extensions, or any other appointments you will need far in advance to avoid any last minute scheduling conflicts. Try to have one of your trial runs about 4-6 weeks out from the wedding so that your hair is at the length and closest to what it will be on the actual day.
4. Don’t forget your bridal party, Mom, Mother-of-the-groom. Upon scheduling your wedding day, ask the salon or stylist about their charges or contracts. Find out how many of your bridal party would like to get their hair done and get them on the schedule also. Stylists will plan their entire Saturday around your wedding if they have advance notice!
5. Bring a picture of your dress and any headpieces you are planning to wear to your trial runs and the big day. This helps the stylist with placement and offering advice on how the overall look will come together.
